İlk yurtdışı görevini ülkemizin Vaşington Büyükelçiliğinde tamamlayan Esenli, sonrasında BM New York Ofisi Daimi Temsilciliği ile BM Cenevre Ofisi Daimi Temsilciliği’nde görev yapmış, 2009 yılında Pekin Büyükelçisi olarak atanmıştır. Sonrasında Roma Büyükelçiliği görevini üstlenen Esenli, halen Bakanlığımızda Dış Politika Danışma Kurulu Üyesi olarak görev yapmaktadır. Esenli, evli ve üç çocuk babasıdır.

Turkish Foreign Policy on the 100th Anniversary of the Republic
On October 9, the Department of International Relations, in cooperation with Ankara Policy Center and the Center for Foreign Policy and Peace Research, held a conference titled “Turkish Foreign Policy on the 100th Anniversary of the Republic: A Reckoning and the Future.”
The conference provided an opportunity for students to come together with prominent scholars of the field to review Turkish foreign policy and to commemorate the Turkish Republic’s 100th Anniversary.

Honoring Prof. Karaosmanoğlu
The Department of International Relations organized an event in June to honor Prof. Ali Karaosmanoğlu, who served as chair of the department from 1988 to 2007. During the event, Prof. Karaosmanoğlu, Rector Kürşat Aydoğan, FEASS Dean Refet Gürkaynak, Prof. Ersel Aydınlı and IR Department Chair Özgür Özdamar gave speeches. Prof. Karaosmanoğlu expressed his gratitude to Prof. İhsan Doğramacı and Prof. Ali Doğramacı for their encouraging attitudes towards research. He thanked them for their support in establishing the Center for Foreign Policy and Peace Research periodical All Azimuth as well as for their contributions to advance the IR department. The second half of the event proceeded with Prof. Aydınlı’s moderation as Prof. Karaosmanoğlu shared his views on international relations discipline. Prof. Karaosmanoğlu emphasized the necessity of reconnecting IR with its roots, such as philosophy, history and law. He stressed the importance of understanding history to fully comprehend the theoretical basis of international relations and to minimize the possible alterations and prejudices in the field. A video documentary of the event and speeches will be broadcast on the IR Department’s Youtube Channel in September 2023.

“Leaders in the Middle East and North Africa, How Ideology Shapes Foreign Policy” is a new book coauthored by Assoc. Prof. Özgür Özdamar, chair of the Department of International Relations, and Sercan Canbolat.
Published by Cambridge University Press, the book explores the study of leadership in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

A ceremony to honor this year’s recipients of the Distinguished Young Scientist (BAGEP) award was held on April 8 at the Bilkent Concert Hall.
Eight Bilkent faculty members were among the individuals receiving awards.
This year, 39 scientists were named BAGEP award recipients. The Bilkent awardees are: Asst. Prof. Ayşenur Dal (Department of Communication and Design), Asst.
