Honoring Prof. Karaosmanoğlu

The Department of International Relations organized an event in June to honor Prof. Ali Karaosmanoğlu, who served as chair of the department from 1988 to 2007. During the event, Prof. Karaosmanoğlu, Rector Kürşat Aydoğan, FEASS Dean Refet Gürkaynak, Prof. Ersel Aydınlı and IR Department Chair Özgür Özdamar gave speeches. Prof. Karaosmanoğlu expressed his gratitude to Prof. İhsan Doğramacı and Prof. Ali Doğramacı for their encouraging attitudes towards research. He thanked them for their support in establishing the Center for Foreign Policy and Peace Research periodical All Azimuth as well as for their contributions to advance the IR department. The second half of the event proceeded with Prof. Aydınlı’s moderation as Prof. Karaosmanoğlu shared his views on international relations discipline. Prof. Karaosmanoğlu emphasized the necessity of reconnecting IR with its roots, such as philosophy, history and law. He stressed the importance of understanding history to fully comprehend the theoretical basis of international relations and to minimize the possible alterations and prejudices in the field. A video documentary of the event and speeches will be broadcast on the IR Department’s Youtube Channel in September 2023.
