Assoc. Prof. Dr. Efe Tokdemir from the Department of International Relations has recently been recognized by the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK).

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Efe Tokdemir has received TÜBİTAK Incentive Award for 2023, for his “outstanding international studies on conflict analysis, foreign policy and public opinion in the field of international relations”.

The TÜBİTAK Incentive Award is given to scientists under the age of 40 who have demonstrated the potential to provide outstanding contributions to science at an international level.

Born in 1988 in Istanbul, Efe Tokdemir graduated from Galatasaray High School in 2007 and completed his undergraduate studies at Boğaziçi University, Department of Political Science and International Relations in 2012. After his undergraduate education, Dr. Tokdemir was accepted to the PhD program at Binghamton – State University of New York and received his PhD degree in Political Science – International Relations and Comparative Politics in 2017. After conducting postdoctoral studies at the Ohio State University Mershon Center for International Security Studies as an International Studies Association Scholar (James N. Rosenau PostDoctoral Fellow) between 2017-2018, Dr. Tokdemir has been working at Bilkent University Department of International Relations since 2018.

His research interests include conflict processes, foreign policy and public opinion, soft power and public diplomacy, and the relationship between domestic politics and international security. His book “Battle for Allegiance Governments, Terrorist Groups, and Constituencies in Conflict”, which focuses on the struggles of states and armed organizations through non-violent strategies, was published by the University of Michigan Press in 2020. Dr. Tokdemir’s current research focuses on the attitudes and behaviors of individuals in response to violent and non-violent strategies developed by states and armed organizations.

Tokdemir, who has an H-index of 7 and 125 citations (Web of Science – December 2023), received the Young Scientist (BAGEP) Award given by the Academy of Science in 2019, the GEBİP Award given by TÜBA in 2020, and the Sakıp Sabancı International Research Award in 2021. Efe Tokdemir’s work has been supported by TÜBİTAK BİDEB 2247-D National Young Leading Researchers Program since 2022 and his articles have been published in the Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of Peace Research, Political Behavior, Conflict Management and Peace Science, British Journal of Politics & International Relations International Interactions, Defense and Peace Economics, which are prestigious journals in the field of International Relations. Efe Tokdemir is also the Director of the Research Center for Foreign Policy and Peace Studies at the Ihsan Doğramacı Peace Foundation.
