Bilkent IR Talks, Spring 2021-2On February 16, 2021, IR Talks @Bilkent hosted Dr. GĂ¶tz Neuneck (Institut fĂŒr Friedensforschung und Sicherheitspolitik (IFSH), UniversitĂ€t Hamburg), who delivered a lecture title âNuclear Verification in the Context of the NPT and TPNWâ. The talk focused on answering the following question: "What is disarmament and how can we verify it?" Drawing from the past and future of nuclear disarmament verification, Dr. Neuneck explained the requirements and experiences of verification, nuclear disarmament, and the technical processes involved.
Dr. GĂ¶tz Neuneck is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institut fĂŒr Friedensforschung und Sicherheitspolitik (IFSH) and Professor at the University of Hamburg. He is an expert in arms control, disarmament, new technologies, nuclear weapons verification, science diplomacy, missile defense, space armaments, space/cybersecurity, and military technology's nonproliferation. From 2008-2018 he was the director of the postgraduate master's program "Peace and Security Studies" at the University of Hamburg. He is a member of the Council of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. He is Pugwash representative of the VDW, spokesman for the Physics and Disarmament Working Group of the German Physical Society (DPG.), member of editorial boards of specialist journals, representative of the Union of German Academies of Sciences, and an elected foreign member of the Russian and Armenian Academy of Sciences. After studying physics in DĂŒsseldorf ( 984), he worked with Horst Afheldt and Carl-Friedrich von WeizsĂ€cker in the Max Planck Society, Starnberg. After receiving his doctorate (1985) at the University of Hamburg, he became a research assistant at IFSH under Egon Bahr.
